Our History

We’ve been delivering quality childcare across Aberdeen City and Shire for 20 years — and we just keep going from strength to strength!

Thank Evans was established in 2000 after founder Susan Evans was pregnant for the second time and was looking for some extra support at home. When she failed to find exactly what she needed, she realised that many others were probably experiencing the same and a solution was needed.

Having risen to that challenge, Susan has not only built a company but created an enviable reputation in childcare. What has set Thank Evans apart from the outset is our commitment to providing a positive, loving environment for every child in our care — and building in the flexibility to deliver that care to meet individual family needs. 

And we’re proud to say we always fit in around your life — we never expect you to fit in around ours!

Thank Evans has been registered as a childcare agency with the Care Inspectorate (formerly the Care Commission) since 2003, and we are consistently rated ‘very good’ for the quality of our staff and the care they deliver.

After six months with Thank Evans, all new team members must be individually registered with the Scottish Social Services Council and that includes our managers. Every member of our 40-strong team is also an employee, which means everyone benefits from our investment in training, continuing personal development, regular assessments, incentives, and monthly staff awards.

At any one time, we have more than 40 trained full-time and part-time staff on our team — and we’re always welcoming more on board to meet growing demand!

Susan Evans

Susan is a born-and-bred Aberdonian and worked in the corporate energy sector in a mix of technical and support roles before launching Thank Evans in 2000.

Her inspiration came while she was pregnant with her second daughter. She could not find the kind of childcare support she was looking for — and quickly realised other parents must be facing the same challenges. So she took voluntary redundancy, took the plunge, and carried out market research which backed her hunch: there was a gap in the childcare market for providing new and expectant parents with support.

And so Susan laid the foundations of Thank Evans.

Susan is the first to admit that while she had no formal childcare qualifications, she had a vision of what she wanted her business to be and do and — importantly — knew where her strengths lay. She launched the business from a mum’s perspective and that’s what continues to underpin Thanks Evans’ success — staying in touch with what busy parents need and working with her team to make it happen.

She still lives in Aberdeen with her family — she has two daughters and two granddaughters — and enjoys keeping fit as well as ballroom dancing and salsa when her busy life allows. She’s done a parachute jump for charity, taken part in a Strictly Come Prancing fundraiser, and loves her music — her favourite bands are Snow Patrol and Take That.

Gillian Thom

Gillian is Susan’s right-hand woman!

She is a qualified nurse who first joined Thank Evans as a nanny, working with two families over five years before taking on her current role in 2015. 

Her main nursing experience was in palliative care and then as an office-based community care supervisor and it was while her daughters were growing up that she joined Thank Evans part-time. 

Being a nanny fitted in around Gillian’s nursing shifts — as well as being her ‘fun job’ — and that wide experience means she really understands what’s involved in working in a family’s home and playing such a key role in parents’ lives.

As Office Manager, Gillian’s wide range of responsibilities includes staff recruitment, rota planning, chairing monthly staff meetings, organising training and validating SSSC registrations.

She also works closely with Thank Evans clients — responding to and assessing their needs, allocating staff to families, answering inquiries — while keeping the accounts in order and helping promote the business. 

Gillian has two grown-up daughters and her spare time pivots around her husband and family. She loves meeting friends, eating out, and walking black Lab Willow in Deeside where she lives.
